MICHIGAN LAUNCHES NEW YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PERMIT SYSTEM
Effective October 2, 2026 | Michigan | Hiring Minors
THE QUICK TAKE
Michigan is changing how employers obtain work permits for minors. Beginning October 2, employers hiring workers under 18 will use Michigan’s new online Youth Employment Permit Portal (YEPP) instead of the school-based work permit process.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
-
- Employers hiring minors must register with YEPP.
- Minors must obtain a valid work permit through YEPP before beginning employment, unless an exemption applies.
- Existing school-issued permits remain valid if they were issued before October 2. Employers should continue keeping these permits on file.
- A new YEPP permit is required if a minor changes employers or begins working at a different worksite.
- Employers should update their hiring and onboarding procedures and ensure managers responsible for hiring minors understand the new process.
- Other youth employment requirements remain in effect, including restrictions related to work hours, scheduling, supervision and hazardous or prohibited work.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Restaurant operators employing minors in Michigan should:
-
- Register for YEPP and become familiar with the new permitting process.
- Update hiring and onboarding procedures for minor employees beginning October 2.
- Train managers responsible for hiring and scheduling minors on the new requirements.
- Keep existing school-issued permits on file for current minor employees.
- Review youth employment practices to ensure compliance with scheduling, hour and prohibited-work restrictions.
